While you’re in the beautiful Appalachian town of Canton, NC, be sure to take advantage of the local parks when you need some time in the sun. You’ll find several lovely locations for relaxing, throwing a ball, walking the family dog, or having a picnic. Check out the following venues where you can get some fresh air.

Drive on Over: 3 Local Parks Near Canton, NC

1. Chestnut Mountain 

This 450-acre outdoor paradise is home to a host of wildlife. It’s also the perfect place for hikers and mountain bikers as there are more than 15 trails. Choose from easy, moderate, or advanced hiking and biking trails, depending on your skill level and desire. Visit their website for an entire list of all the trails so you can make an informed decision on which one you’d like to tackle.

There’s even an app that you can download to your phone so you can keep track of your progress as you hike or bike. When you’re finished, make use of the picnic tables and day-use area. Chestnut Mountain is just one mile outside of Canton at 2415 Asheville Hwy., and it is open every day from 7:30 a.m. to dusk.


2. Canton Dog Park

Calling all the furry friends in Canton! Your dog will love you even more when you bring him to this off-leash venue. There is one area for large dogs and another for small dogs. Don’t forget to bring Fluffy’s favorite ball so he can play catch. There are benches for the owners to sit on as well. Just keep a close eye on your dog at all times.

Also, please pick up after your dog. If you don’t have your own bags, there is a waste station available. There is also water available for Fluffy if he didn’t bring his own. Visit here at 77 Penland St. any day between dawn and dusk.


3. Canton Recreation

Featuring a swimming pool, hiking trails, basketball courts, a sand volleyball court, shuffleboard, and picnic areas, this venue makes the perfect stop for enjoying the outdoors. It’s also located along the Pigeon River and there is an area for launching kayaks and canoes. If you take advantage of the pool, admission is $5 for a day pass, or you can save a few dollars by purchasing a 10-day pass.

Plan to spend an entire day here as there’s plenty to do! The recreation establishment can be found at 77 Penland St.
